Oorspronkelijk werden de wangen ook wel de 'schoor-stenen' genoemd, waarvan ons woord '[[schoorsteen]]' is afgeleid. <br /> Als onderdeel van de schouw was de wang vaak een muurtje of een natuurstenen [[pilaster]] om de [[rookvang]] of [[boezem]] van een ([[hangschouw|hang]])schouw te ondersteunen. De wangen of schoor-stenen hadden vaak stijlkenmerken en decoraties in de [[Hollandse Renaissance]]-stijl uit de 16de eeuw. Ook de vroeg 17de eeuwse schouwen hadden vaak wangen. <br /> Aan het einde van de 17de eeuw zijn bij de meeste hangschouwen de wangen of schoor-stenen geheel verdwenen.
