Een dergelijke zijlangsdeel betekent dat de werkruimte van de schuur zich aan de zijkant van de schuur bevindt. Deze werkruimte kon tevens als inrit voor wagens gebruikt worden. Dit is ook te zien aan de aanwezigheid van een of twee inrijpoorten. Door de benodigde hoogte van de inrijpoort was het nodig om het rieten dak op die plek iets op te lichten of een inspringende hoek te maken. Dit creëert de typische asymmetrische met golvende dakrand van de Vlaamse schuur. De draagconstructie wordt gevormd door een eenzijdig doorstekend [[Ankerbalkgebinten|ankerbalkgebint]]. De middenruimte deed vaak dienst als de [[tasruimte]] waar stro en hooi werd bewaard. In die periode stichtten abdijen kloosters in de ingedijkte gebieden langs de Noordzee. Bij deze kloosters, die vaak grote landerijen in bezit hadden, was steeds meer behoefte aan ruime schuurgebouwen om de rijke oogst te bergen.
