Het beschrijft de mate van aantasting van het ontwerp en de onderdelen. <br /> <br /> ===Behouden of vernieuwen===<br /> Hoe gaver een gebouw, hoe herkenbaarder het ontwerp en hoe groter de historische beleving ervan. Elke ingreep tast die historische materie aan. Het oorspronkelijke gebouw/complex komt bij een verbouwing of [[restauratie]] verder af te staan van de originele versie. Daarom gaat [[behouden gaat voor vernieuwen|behouden altijd voor vernieuwen]]. <br /> <br /> ===Verbouwen en verrijken===<br /> Het is echter niet zo dat élke ingreep in elk opzicht negatief is. Een verbouwing die aansluit op het uiterlijk van het gebouw/complex, kan soms een heuse verrijking zijn. Het originele ontwerp wordt weliswaar aangetast wat een schade betekent, maar er kan wel degelijk iets waardevols toegevoegd worden.<br /> <br /> ===Replica's en reconstructies===<br /> Het reconstrueren van iets wat verloren is gegaan leidt vaak tot discussie op het gebied van [[restauratie-ethiek]]. Bij reconstructies wordt de herkenbaarheid vergroot en is het ontwerp gaaf. De materie echter niet waardoor het niet volledig gaaf te noemen is. Het oorspronkelijke ontwerp wordt zo goed mogelijk teruggebracht, maar het blijft natuurlijk een reconstructie. De historische waarde wordt dus slechts deels vergroot. <br /> Zelfs wanneer een ruïne met dezelfde brokstukken wordt herbouwd, geldt een gebouw als een reconstructie. De stenen zijn wel origineel maar de specie is dat niet. En het is ook niet mogelijk om specie te maken met exact dezelfde samenstelling als het originele werk. Daarnaast worden er vaak toch moderne bouwkundige manieren in de replica verwerkt om een tweede instorting te voorkomen. <br /> Dit wil niet zeggen dat een replica historisch waardeloos is. Ze kunnen immers nog steeds inzicht geven in de originele bouwtijd.
