De arbeiders kwamen al in de 17e eeuw in de zomer te voet naar Nederland om op het land te werken. De eerste arbeiders kwamen om gras te maaien. Toen bekend werd dat Nederlanders geïnteresseerd waren in Duitse koopwaar, begonnen sommige hannekemaaiers, om wat extra geld te verdienen, deze waren mee te nemen in manden op de rug. Naar schatting 140.000 uit het huidige Duitsland afkomstige hannekemaaiers hebben zich tussen 1815 en 1850 blijvend in Nederland gevestigd. <br /> <br /> De hannekemaaiers waren veelal [[Keuterboer|keuterboeren]] die in hun eigen land maar weinig konden verdienen. Vanaf de 19e eeuw veranderde dit door de toenemende welvaart in het industrialiserende Duitsland.
