Ontstaan in de late middeleeuwen, kenmerkt het zich door een rechthoekige opzet waarin het woongedeelte en het bedrijfsgedeelte onder één dak zijn samengebracht. Een karakteristiek kenmerk is de driedeling in drie beuken: een brede centrale ruimte (de deel) en twee smalle zijbeuken. De deel diende als werkruimte voor het dorsen van graan en andere agrarische werkzaamheden. In de zijbeuken werd vee gehuisvest en gereedschap en materialen opgeslagen. Deze boerderijen zijn afgeleid van de driebeukige hallehuisstructuur, maar in de loop van de 18de eeuw werden ze versmald en verlengd. Hierdoor ontstonden tweebeukige of zelfs éénbeukige boerderijen waarbij de verschillende functies niet meer naast elkaar, maar achter elkaar werden geplaatst.
